LAND TRUST CHARTER

The Bonnet Shore Fire District Land Trust: Legislation approved by the R.I. General Assembly in the January Session of 1991, created the Bonnet Shores Land Trust. The R.I. General Assembly subsequently passed amendments in a second act in 1992. The 1991 act as amended represents the “charter” of the BSFD Land Trust and provides the legal basis for the Land Trust. The primary goals of the Bonnet Shore Fire District Land Trust are to:   (1) Preserve open space in Bonnet Shores   (2) Preserve and protect Bonnet Shores’ two beaches.Since it was created in 1991, the Bonnet Shores Land Trust is charged with the preservation and protection of land in Bonnet Shores.
Important projects we are currently working on include:

  • A FEMA grant being performed by URI School of Oceanography to assess the waters off of Little Beach to assess the water and seaweed patterns and provide options for decreasing shoreline erosion at Little Beach.
  • Signage for Land Trust properties including the Wesquage Wildlife Refuge, Kelly Beach, and the Bonnet Battery.
  • Upkeep and enhancement of Community Center building and property.
  • Plus, many other projects to enhance our community!

In the coming year, we will be working on supporting these Land Trust projects, through funding and volunteerism. We are looking for residents who will play an active and constructive role working on these projects or who might have other ideas for the Land Trust. Any resident with the following skills/ talents would be tremendous assets to the Land Trust and our purpose.

  • Legal expertise for contract reviews and land acquisitions
  • Experience or interest in fund raising
  • Ecology for help with the Water Shed Plan and water testing of Wesquage Pond
